Systemic Family Constellations

Facilitated by Michael I. Gurevich, M.D.

Based on the work of Dr. Bert Hellinger

Systemic Family Constellation work allows us to look at how events that occurred in past generations impact our present life experiences. Hidden family dynamics, often spanning two or more generations, may create imbalance or disharmony in the family “field”. These disturbances may lead to illness, depression, suicides, relationship difficulties, accidents, or career problems for current family members.  We can discover the nature of the hidden dynamics by setting up family constellations using representatives to stand in the place of family members, living or dead. When these constellations are set up authentically through listening deeply within and following the movements that arise from listening, they can reveal the true disharmony affecting the client.  Constellation work allows movement towards restoring balance and order to the clients’ health, well being and family relationships.

Participating as an observer or representative is often as valuable as creating one’s own constellation. Our efficient, time limited workshop community provides a safe place for the soul shifts that can happen when all parts of the family system are acknowledged and given their rightful places. All participants have the opportunity to tap into the information that exists in the field and may benefit from the knowledge.

If you would like to work on your own family constellation it would be helpful to draw a genogram of your family. Please see attachment for instructions.

Healing diet

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Poor nutrition is an epidemic; just look around you: over 60% of the US population are overweight and over 30% are obese. How and what we eat makes us healthy or sick. I will give you just a few remarks about food and then several more detailed recommendations about diets are available in separate files.

Use very simple principals in choosing food:

  • Did our ancestors have it 10,000 years ago?
  • Was the food processed before it came to you? All processed foods contain preservatives that your body does not know what to do with, and therefore can cause you trouble.
  • Choose food that can rot and spoil, but eat it before it gets rotten or spoiled. For example, even cockroaches do not eat morning cereals so why should you?
  • 40-45% of your diet should consist of greens.
  • Choose products with intense rainbow colors; the more intense the color the healthier the food; include all rainbow colors in your diet.

Systemic Family Constellation Therapy (SFCT)

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Systemic Family Constellation Therapy allows the revealing of invisible family bonds created through generations. If dysfunctional, these bonds can become the cause of debilitating patterns unconsciously creating career setbacks, relationship problems, and significant physical and emotional problems. Worse yet, it can be passed on to our children. SFCT allows making invisible bonds between family members visible, and facilitates rapid resolution of long standing intergenerational conflicts, thus resolving emotional and physical problems. SFCT reveals unconscious patterns hidden through traditional psychotherapy. It facilitates the restoration of the flow of love between family members who are alive and those who have passed away. It is more of a spiritual than a psychotherapy approach.

SFCT was developed by Bert Hellinger, a well-known German psychotherapist and a former Christian monk. He worked for many years as a missionary in Africa. He developed his approach by observing the work of shamans and integrating it with psychotherapeutic understanding. Bert Hellinger’s work is widely practiced in Western Europe and other countries of the world.

Positive Psychology

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

A Wellness and Happiness Coach supports the patient in his/her search for happiness and meaning in life. As the world gets more complex, it is becoming more and more difficult for people to navigate through the many life choices available and find a niche where they feel comfortable, secure, productive and content. A Wellness and Happiness Coach helps people discover their inner strengths and then supports them in designing actions that will use those strengths to develop a more fulfilling life. According to Martin Seligman, Department of Psychology, University of Pennsylvania, renowned author of “Authentic Happiness”, “raising children is more than fixing what is wrong with them. It is about identifying and nurturing their strongest qualities, what they own and are best at, and helping them find niches in which they can best live out these strengths.” This principle applies to adults as well, especially adults who are lost and struggling to find a reason to have hope and meaning in their lives.

Medications and Psychotherapy

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Medication use has become prominent in the last 40-50 years with the advent and proliferation of multiple psychotropic medications. In many cases medications have saved and change the lives of many people. However, they also have many side effects and limitations. Those who suffer from emotional conditions are often looking for alternatives to the multiple known and emerging side effects. Unfortunately, most Western-trained psychiatrists are only vaguely aware of them.

We offer options for those who are on medications and prefer to continue to take them as part of their treatment. For those who would like to get off medications there are many alternatives in healing.

Psychotherapy has been another cornerstone of traditions psychiatry. It has deep roots in Freudian psychoanalysis. It has been an incredible tool in deepening understanding of our psychology, but unfortunately disappointing in helping to provide healing for those in need. Multiple and essentially very similar modifications have emerged, competing with each other.

The methods we offer can compliment ongoing psychotherapy or provide alternative options.

Herbs and Supplements

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Herbs, supplements, and dietary changes have been used for centuries to treat emotional conditions.

Orthomolecular psychiatry is a method of treatment based on providing brain cells with an optimal concentration of those substances normally present in the brain, such as nutrients, and removing those substances which do not belong, such as toxins, allergens, and heavy metals. Orthomolecular psychiatry began in the 1970s with the work of such doctors as Abraham Hoffer, Carl C. Pfeiffer, David R. Hawkins and the Nobelist, Linus Pauling. Even though multiple double blind controlled studies have been available for a long time, the field still remains on the outskirts of the western psychiatric approach.

Dietary changes and removal of toxins, particularly heavy metals, are very important in healing emotional and chronic medical conditions.

Herbs are very effective in the treatment of psychiatric conditions. The effect of herbs is usually milder and less toxic to the body. It is usually not one, but multiple biologically active components that are working in conjunction, producing healing effects. Herbs should be cautiously used in combination with medications.

Meditation

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Meditation – has been used for centuries by many different cultures, spiritual and religious movements. The scientific community is finally paying attention to this time proven technique, recognizing its unique effectiveness in healing multiple emotional, spiritual and psychiatric conditions, as well as in facilitating self-care and balance. It gives a client an opportunity to be his own healer. There are many ways to learn meditation, from listening to cassettes to attending courses, during the office visit or biofeedback session. Simple meditation techniques can be easy to learn and practice.

Guided Imagery

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Guided imagery is an example of the mind/body/spirit connection used for healing. It utilizes a human’s natural ability through their power of imagination. There are many different forms of imagery: patients may visit imaginary places, examine different issues in their life and come in contact with variety of forces moving in their body and soul. Imagery has been used for millennia by religions and spiritual movements – it is a part of our every day life.

Quite often, we confuse reality with our imagination as our body will frequently responds to imagination as if it was reality. A simple experiment can illustrate this. Imagine holding a lemon in your hand: looking at it, smelling it and touching it. Now imagine cutting this lemon and tasting it. You may suddenly find your mouth full of saliva even though there never was any actual lemon. You body simply responded to your imagination as if it was reality.

Imagery allows us to access the deeply hidden closets of our unconsciousness. It requires only openness and curiosity from the patient. The imagery is easily provided by the patient’s mind.

One of the easiest ways to produce imagery is by just guiding a client through a variety of healing places. If there was a conflict, I help them imagine facing the person they had the conflict with. The possibilities are endless but a therapist can only take a patient as far as their imagination can go.

I use a variety of imaginary techniques and they have been an invaluable part of my practice. Often, a patient may not feel comfortable initially or may be threatened by the images they come in contact with. It is important to use imagery gradually and go only as far as the patient is ready to go.

Imagery allows one to transcend time. An adult man may suddenly see his father as he did when he was a little boy. The great thing about imagery is that it is a patient who does all the work – I am just a fascinated observer sitting next to them. I never know what will happen and where it will bring us. Still, in my experience, it is the safest method around.

Since I learnt the Systemic Family Constellation approach, it has enhanced my practice of guided imagery. Now, imagery is more often an interactive, exciting process where the alive and the dead can interact with the patient. It has become a truly healing tool.

Following a session I usually give a patient an assignment to draw, write or do some other exercise. It helps them become a healer for themselves.

Energetic Healing

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Energetic Treatments can be considered as the second level of healing. The energetic aspects of our body can be felt as tingling, electrical, heat, or movement sensations. During light meditation we can often separate the energetic and physical parts of our body.

The energetic aspect of our body has long been accepted by most traditional healing approaches such as acupuncture, Chi Gong, Tai Chi, Ayurveda, the Chakra system, meditation, yoga, and shamanism.

At its core, there is an understanding that there is energy moving within our body that creates an electromagnetic field. This field is connected to everything in and around us: our cells, organs, other human beings, animals, plants, natural objects, planets, and stars. Everything that happens within us has an energetic component. Any biochemical reaction has an energetic component. Thoughts, emotions, and movements all have an energetic component.

The main idea is that there in no significant separation between the physical and energetic worlds. Working through the energetic aspects of our body, we have the ability to change the physical conditions we are dealing with, to heal both emotional and physical illnesses.
